Bridging the Gap Between Field and Innovation
The organization recognized that great ideas can come from anyone. However, existing platforms were too technical for non-engineering staff. I designed "Capture It", an MVP that shifts focus from complex solutions to raw customer pain points, empowering field employees to share insights they overhear every day.
Delivered a low-barrier, psychologically safe MVP concept that eliminates technical jargon and combats "solution-bias."
The Innovation Bottleneck
Every day, customer-facing employees—Field Engineers, Account Managers, and Sales Professionals—overhear customer frustrations. Yet, these insights rarely reached the innovation team because existing tools were built for engineering, requiring complex technical language.
Psychological Barriers
Research revealed that the barrier wasn't just technical. Employees suffered from "Solution-Bias" (instinctively fixing rather than recording) and Fear of Escalation (worrying that documenting complaints might reflect poorly on their own performance).
Listening to the Voices in the Field
I conducted an anonymous discovery study with participants across various roles. By mapping these into personas, I identified "silent blockers" that kept ideas from being shared:
Information Filtering
Field experts often filtered "soft" pain points, deeming them less relevant than major technical failures.
Feedback Loop
Participants valued constructive feedback over rewards. Knowing input was heard was the key to engagement.
The Guided Funnel Framework
To address these barriers, I designed a Guided Funnel. It breaks the process into small steps focusing exclusively on the problem: "What struggle did the customer express?". By omitting solution-based questions, the tool captures raw insights before they are "translated" into technical proposals.
Creating a Safe Harbor
The interface emphasizes confidentiality and psychological safety. It guarantees that sharing a struggle is a contribution to growth, never a risk to the employee's role.
Final Reflection
Corporate innovation is about the culture of participation. By using UX research to uncover hidden barriers and designing a safe entry point, I turned every field employee into a valuable contributor to the company’s growth.
